On average, we lose up to 100 hairs a day, but if you’re concerned that your hair is thinning at a faster rate than normal, don’t worry. We’ve prepared everything you need to know about what causes thinning hair, what to do for thinning hair, and how to maintain strong and healthy hair.
What Causes Thinning Hair?
Hair thinning occurs when strands become thinner, fall out or simply break.
Before working out the causes of hair thinning, start by asking yourself why your hair feels thinner than normal. As well as genetics, there are multiple potential causes of thinning hair, including (but not limited to):
Hormonal Changes
When asking yourself “why is my hair thinning in the front?”, try to pinpoint any life changes that could have affected your hormonal profile (such as PCOS hair loss, pregnancy or menopause). These hormonal changes could be the root cause of your thinning hair.
Watermans Tip: It’s important to note that hormone imbalances can occur in both men and women, causing hair thinning at the front of the scalp and on the crown.
Stress
Did you know that, in times of high stress, the body’s level of the ‘fight or flight’ hormone, cortisol, natural increases, hindering blood flow to certain areas of the skin? If hair follicles are at the receiving end of this change, it can stunt natural hair growth cycle and cause hair to thin.
Watermans Tip: Head massages not only help to alleviate stress but can stimulate hair follicles and support natural hair growth.
Hair Styling
As we all know, everyday styling with heated tools, tight hair bands or hair clips can contribute to the weakening of hair, causing breakages, a loss in volume and thinner-feeling strands.
When using heated styling tools, always remember to apply a heat protection spray to form a protective barrier over the hair.
Try our award-winning Protect Me Heat Protection Spray It not only shields all hair types from up to 230°C, but is rich in Caffeine and Coconut Oil, 2 ingredients that promote healthy-looking hair.
Medication
Hair thinning is a potential side effect of some antidepressants, beta-blockers, steroids and Accutane. If you’ve noticed your hair thinning since starting on a new medication, speak to your GP.
Diet
A balanced diet is one of the easiest ways to promote strong, healthy hair. Vitamins B12 and iron have been linked to healthy hair growth, so incorporating these into a balanced diet can help improve overall hair condition.
